The Ritz Carlton Kyoto

THE RITZ-CARLTON, KYOTO REFLECTS THE TIME-HONORED TRADITIONS OF JAPANESE HOSPITALITY.

The Ritz Carlton Kyoto opened in February 2014 as the first international luxury hotel brand in Kyoto and the first luxury urban resort in Japan. The Ritz Carlton Kyoto is a place where the age-old Japanese traditions of refinement, elegance and hospitality merge seamlessly with contemporary Western comforts. Overlooking the Kamogawa river, in a prime location favored by Japanese noblemen since the 17th century, the hotel offers sublime views of the river and the Higashiyama mountain range, and easy access to the vibrant downtown districts of Gion, Pontocho and Kawaramachi. The luxury hotel is also within minutes of world-class shopping, and is conveniently located near Kyoto Station. Blending the centuries old traditions and rich culture of Japan’s ancient capital with modern luxury, The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto brings to life the cultural heart of Japan.

Located in the heart of a city famed for its Zen temples, palaces and gardens, the downtown luxury resort brings the unsurpassed elegance and renowned service of The Ritz Carlton Kyoto, while honoring the cultural heritage of the city through design. The resort is 100 minutes’ drive from Kansai International Airport.

GUEST ROOMS AND SUITES

Designed by Remedios Design Studio, the Japan resort features 134 guest rooms and suites, most with breathtaking views of the Kamogawa river and the Higashiyama mountains. The resort features 17 luxurious suites including the Garden Terrace Suite – floor-to-ceiling windows with private Zen garden terrace deck; Garden Terrace Suite TATAMI – traditional tatami mats and futon with Japanese gardens and Higashiyama mountain views and personal balcony with table for contemplation and relaxation; Corner Suite TATAMI – traditional Japanese style with traditional tatami mats and futon and décor with Japanese garden and old Kyoto views; Suite TSUKIMI – private garden with traditional moon viewing deck, dining area and study desk; Suite KAMOGAWA – spacious, overlooking the panoramic views of Kamogawa river and Higashiyama mountains; The Ritz-Carlton Suite – premium, spacious suite with private dining room and study, complete with a private balcony and fireplace. All suites are thoughtfully designed to provide luxurious comfort and feature traditional Japanese décor and Kyoto craft tradition.

DESIGN

The resort’s design concept is based on five key words and feelings: Utage (Festive), Seido (serenity and movement), Miyabi (elegance), Hana (splendid) and Nagomi (harmony). The Ritz Carlton Kyoto makes use of a design that is in harmony with the historical neighborhood’s environment, while achieving a fusion of traditional and contemporary Japanese style sought to retain the character and aesthetic of a traditional Meiji house and courtyard into the architectural structure of the building to reflect the ancient culture of the city. Interiors created by Peter Remedios Design Studio pay homage to the traditions of Japan, with patterned motifs created by local artisans and the incorporation of Zen gardens and water features, including a three-story waterfall positioned in the heart of the property. Mizuki, La Locanda and The Bar were designed by Design Studio SPIN infusing exceptional craftsmanship with traditional Japanese influences into modern spaces.

ART

The theme of the property’s extensive art collection is “The Tale of Genji,” the classic novel written by Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century. In the public areas, the design attempts to recreate the atmosphere of the residence of Genji Hikaru, the protagonist of the story. 80 artists, mainly Kyoto’s local artists, have created a total of 409 works interpreting the delicate, graceful sentiment of Genji’s time for the contemporary world.
