Luxury African Safaris with Abercrombie & Kent

Travel Africa in Style

“Join an A&K African safari and experience a world where nature reigns supreme. A&K pioneered the modern African safari in 1962, creating a signature blend of luxury, authenticity and adventure. Today our 11 local African offices employ the continent’s finest tour guides and bring you into the heart of the wildlife action with A&K’s unique mobile tented camps, an elegant and eco-friendly successor of the classic African safaris of Roosevelt and Hemingway.

On an East African safari, witness the Great Migration, as hundreds of thousands of grazing animals and predators cross the plains of Kenya and Tanzania. Venture to Southern Africa for water safaris by dugout canoe through Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and for a visit to mighty Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

A&K was born in Kenya, and as a pioneer in luxury safari tours, we can show you an Africa that’s perfect for you. Wherever you go, count on an experience in which every day is an inspiring adventure.

Which A&K Safari is Right For You?

Travel far from the busy world we live in to the unspoiled natural beauty of Africa for an unforgettable luxury African safari experience. Abercrombie & Kent pioneered the modern safari, and no one has higher standing in Africa. Our long-standing relationships from Nairobi to Cape Town allow us to offer the most desirable experience – from luxury mobile camping to photo safaris – and with the best game viewing in Africa.

Step into East Africa, a world of wildlife and beautiful landscapes that is ideal for a photo safari. Consider a safari in Uganda to track a family of endangered mountain gorilla or head to Southern Africa for a diverse safari experience that combines stays in luxury camping facilities and lodges and a game drives in open four-wheel-drive vehicles for the photo safari opportunities.

A&K brings nearly 50 years of experience arranging luxury African safaris, making yours one of the most rewarding holidays you will ever have.

A Day on Safari, the A&K Way

Your luxury safari in Africa begins early, with a hot mug of coffee or tea delivered to you in bed. Outside, the sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon, and you emerge from your tent to behold a landscape that is stunning in its vastness and tranquility. Fortified against the early morning chill, board your safari vehicle with your driver/guide and set out on the first of the day’s game drives. While each area has its own distinct wildlife population, there is little predicting what you will see in the bush. Elepants may gather around a watering hole; a pair of male cheetah may be seen scanning the surroundings for signs of prey; hyena, perhaps, tear into an early-morning kill; and herds of grazing giraffe and zebra may march across the plains. Your experienced guide has a sixth sense when it comes to wildlife and never fails to get you into the heart of the action. After a few hours of game viewing, stop for breakfast, either back at your camp or at a table laid specially for you in the wild.

In Africa, the animals lie low during the mid-day heat, so you do, too. Back at camp, take a nap, grab a book from the common tent or simply relax on your private veranda. Later in the afternoon, set out on a second game drive, maybe combining wildlife viewing with a visit to a Maasai or Samburu village or a local philanthropic project. As the sun starts to set, perhaps stop at a scenic spot for a sundowner cocktail before returning to camp. Dinner in the bush is always an event, with freshly prepared, multi-course meals served at an elegantly set table. After dinner, gather around the campfire for stories and stargazing, or retire in preparation for another inspiring day on luxury safari in Africa.

The “Big Five”

Swapping stories in the African bush, American and European trophy hunters came to agree on the five most challenging — and thus most essential — animals to track and shoot. While the only “shooting” on an A&K safari is done with a camera, spotting the “Big Five” remains a treasured milestone for every safari traveller.

Mobile Camping Safaris

All I wanted to do now was get back to Africa. We had not left it yet, but when I would wake in the night, I would lie, listening, homesick for it already.

– Ernest Hemingway
Green Hills of Africa (1935)

Gracious Living Under Canvas

Abercrombie & Kent mobile camping safaris continue to redefine the original tented safari with modern-day advantages, all the while staying true to the romantic ambience of the days of Blixen, Hemingway and Roosevelt. Mobile Camping, A&K style, is the most authentic form of safari, a true immersion into the sights and sounds of the bush.

Five-Star Ambience in the Bush

Return from an exhilarating day in the bush to a spacious, veranda-fronted tent furnished in a blend of African and colonial European styles. Hand-woven cushions and cotton sheets cover a large, comfortable bed. Each mobile tent is equipped with fully flushing ceramic toilet, washbasin and shower. Arched, netted windows allow the breeze to pass through. On your veranda, two director’s chairs and a butler table provide the perfect vantage point for sunrises, sunsets or sundowners.

Meals in the bush are also an event. Enjoy fine cuisine prepared with the freshest ingredients by your specially trained cook and served by an attentive staff in a large, candlelit dining tent. Savor a favorite wine or cocktail (on ice) from a fully stocked bar. Then, retire to a comfortable lounge chair by a roaring campfire.

Mobile Camping LayoutService so Attentive, You Never Have to Ask

At camp, two staff members for every guest ensure attentive service that is personalized yet unobtrusive. Your laundry is delivered to your tent, clean and freshly pressed. When you’re ready for a shower, your tent attendant brings you water — warmed to the perfect temperature. While you’re at dinner, your tent attendant turns down your bed, draws the mosquito net and slips a hot water bottle beneath your duvet on chilly nights.

The professional guide who accompanies you is one of the most important factors in the success of your journey. Every A&K Kenyan guide has attained a bronze or silver certification by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association. Behind the scenes, your safari guide chooses campsites, locates wildlife and keeps a seasoned eye on all the workings of camp life. On safari, their love for local cultures, animal and birdlife is unmistakable.

The Best View Is Everywhere

Mobile camping places you right in the heart of Africa’s beauty. Our longstanding reputation and history as the most respected safari outfitter in Africa gives us privileged access to private camping concessions in East Africa’s most beautiful and wildlife-rich territories. We maintain our own fleet of custom-built Land Cruisers and train our drivers ourselves — no other safari company in East Africa does this. When you take to the plains in our safari vehicles, you are guaranteed a window seat.

Responsible Tourism Is Part of Every A&K Safari

Responsible tourism has always been of the highest importance. Everything that comes with us leaves with us, and we take nothing from the land but memories. In addition, we work hand-in-hand with local tribes and villages, funding schools and clinics while providing opportunities for employment.

The Great Migration

Some 1.4 million wildebeest, 250,000 Burchell’s zebra and a smattering of trailing Thomson’s gazelle make the yearlong, round-trip trek from Tanzania’s Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The herds make the 1,200-mile oval circuit with two things in mind: food and water. “The smell of rain and sound of thunder spur the migration forward, but sometimes sideways and even back,” says David Bromham, senior Private Label Guide for A&K East Africa. Along the way, many migrating animals become prey to predators including lion, cheetah, crocodile and hyena.

In fact, around 250,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebra perish in this tough trek, mainly younger ones. “Many times, mother wildebeest will just start running and keep running, not knowing that their young can’t keep up,” says David, an A&K Professional Safari Guide in Tanzania with 26 years of experience. That is one wildlife encounter to witness among many during a visit to East Africa, where the Great Migration’s mind-boggling scope and raw beauty are on full display throughout the year.”
